Philosophy and Sociology

Philosophy and sociology are disciplines that interrogate the foundations and workings of human society from complementary angles. Philosophy asks the deepest questions about knowledge, morality, identity, and the nature of reality, and it approaches them through careful argument and conceptual analysis. Sociology examines how societies are structured, how power and inequality operate, how social norms and institutions shape individual behaviour, and how rapid change in the contemporary world is reshaping communities, identities, and ways of life.

Together, they develop a powerful combination of analytical rigour and social awareness.

At the University of Exeter, this three-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in a different academic and social context, which is particularly enriching in disciplines that are inherently concerned with how different societies think and organise themselves. You will engage with major philosophical traditions and arguments, developing your ability to reason precisely, to question assumptions, and to defend positions with clarity and evidence. Alongside this, you will study sociological theory, research methods, and substantive areas of sociological inquiry such as race, class, gender, religion, and digital society, developing your capacity to analyse social phenomena empirically and theoretically.

Graduates from philosophy and sociology programmes are well-equipped for careers that require sophisticated thinking and strong communication. The civil service, policy research, journalism, education, the charity sector, social research, and human resources are all common destinations. The combination of philosophical rigour and sociological awareness is particularly valuable in roles that involve working with evidence about people's lives and making or influencing decisions that affect them.

Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, sociology, social policy, or law, and some pursue research or academic careers.
