Philosophy and Religion

Philosophy and religion together address some of the deepest and most enduring questions in human thought. Philosophy uses reason and argument to examine what we can know, what there is in the world, how we should live, and what the nature of the mind and society might be. Religion examines how human beings have sought meaning, community, and connection to what they regard as sacred or ultimate, exploring the great traditions of the world from their ancient origins through to their contemporary expressions.

The two disciplines have been in dialogue throughout intellectual history, and studying them together develops rigorous thinking alongside a genuine sensitivity to the diversity of human meaning-making.

At the University of Stirling this four-year full-time programme develops your ability to engage with philosophical arguments and religious traditions with equal seriousness and critical care. You will study major philosophical traditions and key thinkers from the ancient world through to contemporary analytic and continental philosophy, alongside the world's major religious traditions and the methods used to study them academically. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study philosophy and religion in an international context and to bring comparative perspective to both disciplines.

Graduates from philosophy and religion programmes work in education, the civil service, journalism, chaplaincy, community development, interfaith relations, social work, research, and the voluntary sector. The capacity for careful argument, ethical reflection, and engagement with different worldviews that the degree develops is valued across public service, law, healthcare, and any professional context where complex human questions arise. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, theology, religious studies, ethics, or law, developing specialist expertise for academic or professional careers.
