About this course

Philosophy and psychology is one of the most productive academic pairings available, connecting two disciplines that have been in conversation throughout the history of both. Philosophy asks the foundational questions: what is the mind, what is consciousness, can we be certain of our own beliefs, what is the relationship between brain and thought, and what does it mean to act freely? Psychology answers many of these questions empirically, using experimental methods to study perception, cognition, memory, emotion, and behaviour.

Together the two disciplines give you both the conceptual tools to ask precise questions about the mind and the empirical methods to test the answers.

At the University of Stirling, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, which gives you the opportunity to study both disciplines in a different academic and cultural environment. You will engage with core areas of philosophy, including epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, and philosophy of mind, alongside the central scientific areas of psychology: cognitive, social, developmental, and biological psychology, and research methods. The combination is designed to develop both rigorous analytical reasoning and empirical research skills, giving you a distinctive profile that neither discipline alone provides.

A typical entry tariff of 168 points reflects the combined academic demands of the programme. Graduates work in psychology services after further professional training, in research, in human resources, in health and wellbeing roles, in education, in philosophy-related fields including ethics and policy, and in journalism. Many continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, psychology, cognitive science, or related disciplines.

The combination is also increasingly valued in technology ethics and AI research.
