Philosophy and Politics

Philosophy and politics is one of the most celebrated combinations in higher education, and for good reason. Philosophy asks the deepest questions about knowledge, freedom, justice, and the nature of the good life, while politics examines how power is organised, how societies are governed, and how collective decisions are made and contested. The two disciplines have been in dialogue since ancient Athens, and the fundamental questions they share, about what freedom means, by what right rulers govern, and what makes a society good, are as urgent now as they have ever been.

At the University of York, this three-year full-time programme enables you to engage with both the ancient and modern philosophical debates that drive political ideals and the empirical and theoretical study of political institutions, parties, and processes. A sandwich year, year abroad, and work placement opportunities are available, giving you the chance to gain professional and international experience during your studies. You will study epistemology, moral and political philosophy, metaphysics, and logic alongside comparative politics, international relations, political theory, and public policy, developing the analytical rigour of a philosopher alongside the empirical awareness of a political scientist.

The programme develops your capacity for sustained argument and your ability to engage carefully with complexity and disagreement.

Graduates from philosophy and politics programmes are among the most analytically capable and intellectually flexible in any graduate cohort. The civil service, politics, law, journalism, think tanks, public policy, the charity sector, and international organisations are all common destinations. Many continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, political science, law, or public administration, and some pursue academic careers in either discipline.
