Philosophy and Politics

Philosophy and politics is one of the most intellectually productive combinations available at degree level, bringing together two disciplines that have been in conversation for more than two millennia. Philosophy provides the tools for rigorous logical analysis, the examination of fundamental concepts, and the critical evaluation of arguments about ethics, justice, knowledge, and the nature of social reality. Politics examines how power is organised and exercised, how governments are formed and held to account, how policies are made and evaluated, and how different kinds of political systems compare and evolve.

The two disciplines reinforce each other: philosophy makes political analysis more rigorous, and politics gives philosophical reflection a concrete world to engage with.

At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this part-time programme allows you to pursue both disciplines in a flexible format that fits alongside other commitments. You will engage with the major traditions of political philosophy, examining how thinkers from Plato and Aristotle through to Rawls and contemporary critics have grappled with questions of justice, liberty, democracy, and the limits of political authority. Politics modules will develop your understanding of political institutions, electoral systems, international relations, and the empirical and comparative study of political life.

Studying part-time gives you the opportunity to connect the philosophical and political frameworks you encounter in your academic work to the wider world of experience and civic life that you continue to be part of.

Graduates of philosophy and politics programmes move into careers in politics, the civil service, public policy, think tanks, journalism, law, education, and a wide range of other fields where the capacity for careful reasoning and clear argument is valued. The combination is a recognised pathway into the most demanding graduate-entry professional roles, and many graduates go on to postgraduate study in political philosophy, political science, law, or public administration, developing specialist expertise that leads into research or advanced professional practice.
