Philosophy and Politics

Philosophy and politics is a pairing with a long intellectual tradition, uniting two disciplines that have always shared a concern with the most fundamental questions about how human beings should live together. Philosophy provides the tools for rigorous argument, conceptual clarity, and the critical examination of assumptions, while politics examines how power is organised and exercised in real societies and what the competing visions of justice, freedom, and democracy amount to in practice. At Swansea University, this three-year, full-time degree engages with some of the major political and philosophical issues of contemporary life, from the cost of living crisis and climate change to questions about democracy, freedom, truth, and justice that events like Brexit, Trump's presidency, and the COVID-19 pandemic have made acutely pressing. You will develop your skills in philosophical argument and political analysis, learning to bring both empirical understanding and normative reasoning to bear on the questions that most matter.
