About this course

Philosophy and history is a combination with a long and distinguished intellectual pedigree. Philosophers have always been deeply engaged with history, asking what it means to understand the past, how historical knowledge is possible, and what lessons, if any, it can teach us. Historians have in turn drawn on philosophical methods to interrogate the assumptions built into their practice, from the nature of historical causation and the role of individual agency to questions about whose stories get told and how.

Studying the two disciplines together develops an unusual combination of rigorous analytical thinking and deep sensitivity to how ideas, events, and institutions have changed over time.

At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this part-time programme offers an opportunity to engage seriously with both philosophy and history in a way that fits around existing work and life commitments. The Highlands and Islands context enriches both subjects: Scotland's distinctive intellectual history, from the Scottish Enlightenment to contemporary debates about national identity and devolution, provides a living laboratory for the combination of philosophical and historical inquiry. The part-time structure allows you to take a smaller number of courses each week compared to full-time study, extending the overall duration of the degree but making it genuinely manageable for students with other responsibilities.

You will develop skills in philosophical argument and analysis alongside the historical methods of source evaluation, evidence-based reasoning, and narrative construction. The combination trains you to think carefully about the assumptions underlying both disciplines and to bring that critical awareness to bear on concrete historical questions.

Graduates of philosophy and history programmes work in education, the civil service, journalism, law, heritage, and a range of analytical and public-facing roles. The combination of philosophical rigour and historical knowledge is valued wherever complex ideas and long-term perspectives matter. Postgraduate study in philosophy, history, or related humanities disciplines is a natural next step for those who wish to develop their specialism.
