About this course

Philosophy and History is a combination that explores two of the most fundamental dimensions of human inquiry: how we think about truth, value, knowledge, and existence, and how human societies, beliefs, and institutions have developed over time. Philosophy trains you to ask the hardest questions with rigour and precision, examining assumptions, constructing arguments, and evaluating what we can know and how we ought to live. History gives those abstract questions a concrete context, showing how people in different times and places have wrestled with the same fundamental problems, and how events, structures, and ideas have combined to produce the world we inhabit.

At the University of Essex, this five-year, full-time programme includes a foundation year and a year abroad, giving you both a structured academic preparation and an international dimension to your studies. The foundation year provides the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in higher education, while the year abroad places your learning in a different cultural and intellectual environment. On the philosophy side you will engage with ethics, epistemology, political philosophy, metaphysics, and logic, developing the capacity for clear and critical argument that employers in a remarkable range of fields value.

The history component takes you through the events, movements, and social forces that have shaped human experience, training you in research, evidence evaluation, and the construction of persuasive historical accounts.

Graduates of Philosophy and History pursue careers in law, the civil service, journalism, policy, education, research, publishing, and the voluntary sector. The combination of analytical precision and historical perspective is valued in any role that requires understanding complexity, weighing evidence, and communicating clearly. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, history, political theory, law, or related fields, building specialist expertise for academic or professional careers.
