Philosophy and English
Philosophy and English is a pairing that has been natural to thoughtful readers and thinkers for centuries: the questions that philosophy asks, about knowledge, truth, reality, value and meaning, are also the questions that literature explores, not through systematic argument but through narrative, character, image and form. Studying both together means developing two complementary ways of engaging with the world: the rigorous analytical mode of philosophical argument and the interpretive, contextual mode of literary criticism. Each enriches the other.
At the University of Southampton, this joint honours programme allows you to examine fundamental concepts from two complementary angles, as the university's own description puts it, enriching your understanding and appreciation of each discipline. You will study the core areas of philosophy, including epistemology, ethics, political philosophy, the philosophy of mind and metaphysics, alongside the history of English literature from the medieval period through to contemporary writing. In philosophy you will develop the ability to construct and evaluate arguments with rigour and precision; in English you will develop close reading, contextual interpretation and the ability to engage with complex texts across a range of periods and genres.
A year abroad is part of the programme, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner institution overseas and to broaden your intellectual formation.
The skills both disciplines develop, including analytical thinking, precise communication, the ability to work with complex material and intellectual independence, are highly valued across many professional contexts.
Graduates go on to careers in law (with further professional training), publishing, journalism, education, the civil service, think tanks, arts administration, communications and many other fields where strong analytical and communicative capabilities matter. Further study in philosophy, English, ethics, political theory or related disciplines is also a common route.
