Philosophy and Beginners' Czech

Philosophy and Czech (with Slovak) is an unusual and intellectually ambitious combination, joining one of the oldest and most demanding academic disciplines with the study of two closely related Slavic languages spoken by tens of millions of people in central Europe. Philosophy trains you to think with precision about the hardest questions concerning knowledge, reality, morality, language, and the mind. The Czech and Slovak strand opens access to the literary, philosophical, and political cultures of two countries whose twentieth-century history generated some of the most significant ideas in European thought.

At the University of Oxford you will work across both disciplines over four years full time, developing genuine philosophical rigour alongside linguistic competence in Czech and Slovak. In philosophy you will engage with logic, metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and the philosophy of mind, working from primary texts and learning to construct and evaluate arguments with care. The language strand takes you from beginner level through to a reading and communicative proficiency that allows serious engagement with Czech and Slovak literature, film, history, and political culture.

The connections between the two are genuine: Czech and Slovak intellectual traditions are rich philosophical traditions in their own right, and studying them together offers perspectives that neither discipline alone can provide.
