Pharmacy

Pharmacy is a clinical health profession that sits at the intersection of science and patient care. Pharmacists are experts in medicines: how they work at the molecular and physiological level, how they interact with one another, how they should be dosed for different patients and conditions, and how their use can be monitored and optimised. Increasingly, pharmacists are delivering enhanced clinical services across healthcare settings, working as prescribers and taking on roles that extend well beyond the dispensing and supply of medicines.

The profession is one of the most directly important in the health system.

At Swansea University, this four-year full-time degree prepares you for the full range of pharmacist roles by integrating the sciences that underpin pharmacy, including pharmacology, pharmaceutics, chemistry, and microbiology, with extensive practice experience in clinical and community settings. The programme recognises the changing face of pharmacy and prepares you for the advanced and new clinical roles that the profession is increasingly taking on. You will develop the ability to make clinical decisions about medicines, to communicate with patients and other health professionals with confidence and clarity, and to apply scientific knowledge to real therapeutic challenges.

A typical entry tariff of 136 points applies.

You will develop expertise in medicines mechanisms and management, clinical pharmacy practice, pharmaceutical sciences, and the legal and professional frameworks within which pharmacy operates. Practice placements throughout the degree give you experience of the diversity of settings in which pharmacists work.

On successful completion and registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council, you will be qualified to practise as a pharmacist in community, hospital, GP practice, and other settings. Career development can lead to specialist clinical roles, prescribing practice, medicines management, public health, academia, and the pharmaceutical industry.
