Pharmacy

Pharmacy is the health profession concerned with the safe and effective use of medicines, combining deep scientific knowledge with patient-centred clinical practice. Pharmacists understand how drugs work at a molecular level, how the body processes them and how to select, dose, monitor and counsel patients on their use. They work across a wide range of settings, from community pharmacies and hospital wards to research, industry and prescribing roles that have expanded considerably in recent years as the profession's clinical scope has grown.

At Queen's University of Belfast the four-year Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) programme integrates scientific and clinical content from the outset, building a comprehensive understanding of how to apply pharmaceutical knowledge to complex clinical problems. You will learn from practising pharmacists and pharmacist prescribers, and gain workplace experience across different pharmacy settings throughout the course. The programme develops your consultation skills, clinical decision-making, professional accountability and leadership ability, preparing you to work effectively with patients, carers and the wider healthcare team.

Graduates are equipped to register as pharmacists and to practise across the full range of pharmacy settings.

Registered pharmacists work in community pharmacy, NHS hospital pharmacy, primary care, academia, the pharmaceutical industry, regulatory agencies and the armed forces. The expanding scope of pharmacist prescribing and independent clinical roles has opened new career paths in general practice, urgent care and specialist clinical services. Many pharmacists develop specialist expertise in areas such as oncology, critical care, paediatrics or mental health pharmacy, and many go on to postgraduate clinical diplomas or research qualifications.

The profession offers strong and consistent employment prospects in the UK and internationally, with a clear progression pathway from registration to advanced and consultant-level practice.
