About this course

Pharmacology is the science of drugs: how they interact with biological systems, how they produce their effects both therapeutic and toxic, and how they are developed, tested, and regulated. It sits at the heart of one of the world's most important industries and one of medicine's most significant tools, drawing on chemistry, physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology to understand how compounds modify the body's functions at the cellular and molecular level. At the University of Northampton, this four-year, full-time programme includes both an integrated foundation year, providing a structured and supportive entry route for students building towards degree-level scientific study, and a sandwich placement year, giving you extended professional experience in a pharmacological or pharmaceutical context.

The foundation year builds your scientific confidence and knowledge across biology, chemistry, and quantitative reasoning before you move into the main pharmacology programme. You will then study drug mechanisms, receptor pharmacology, drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics, toxicology, neuropharmacology, and the drug discovery and development process, developing both the theoretical understanding and the laboratory skills that the discipline requires. Work placement opportunities are embedded throughout the programme, reinforcing the applied and professional focus of the degree.

Graduates of pharmacology find careers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries in drug discovery, development, and clinical trials, as well as in regulatory affairs, medical affairs, and scientific communication. NHS and public health roles, research positions in academia, and careers in the medical devices and diagnostics sectors are also common destinations. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study, including research degrees or conversion programmes in medicine or dentistry.

Pharmacology provides a rigorous and professionally relevant foundation for those who want to contribute to the science of medicines and the improvement of human health.

Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: OSCEs are tough but you leave competent. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant student city with plent…

Genuinely worthwhile
This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” good tra…
