About this course

Pharmacology is the scientific study of how drugs and other chemical substances interact with living systems. It is the discipline that underlies the development of nearly every medicine in clinical use, from antibiotics and analgesics to cancer treatments and psychiatric drugs. Pharmacologists work at the intersection of chemistry and biology, investigating the mechanisms by which compounds exert their effects on cells, tissues and whole organisms, and using this knowledge to guide the design of safer and more effective therapeutic agents.

It is a discipline with direct implications for human health and one that demands both rigorous scientific thinking and creative problem-solving.

At the University of Keele, this five-year full-time programme includes a foundation year that builds the scientific foundations needed for degree-level study, followed by four years of pharmacology content that develops your knowledge and skills progressively to masters level. You will combine cutting-edge theory with extensive practical experience in the laboratory, developing expertise in drug discovery and development, pharmacokinetics, molecular pharmacology and research methodology. The masters-level content of the programme is particularly valuable for those who wish to continue into a research career, whether at PhD level, in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries or in the broader bioscience sector.

The additional year of study provides an enhanced depth of training that reflects the scientific rigour the discipline demands.

Pharmacology graduates go on to careers in pharmaceutical research and development, the biotechnology industry, clinical trials management, toxicology, regulatory affairs and academic research. Many use the degree as a platform for doctoral study, particularly in drug discovery, neuropharmacology, cardiovascular pharmacology or translational medicine. Others move into science communication, healthcare policy, medical writing or roles in the regulatory agencies that oversee drug approvals.
