About this course

Pharmacology is the science of how chemical substances interact with biological systems, particularly how drugs produce their effects in the body and how those effects can be harnessed therapeutically or understood mechanistically. It is a discipline that bridges biochemistry, physiology, cell biology, and medicine, and it is fundamental to the development of new treatments for disease. Understanding how a drug works at the molecular level, how it distributes through the body, how it is metabolised and excreted, and how individual variation affects its effects are all questions at the heart of pharmacology, and they are questions with direct consequences for human health.

At the University of Reading, this four-year, full-time programme includes a year in industry, in which you spend a structured period working in a pharmaceutical company, medical research organisation, or related industrial or clinical setting. This experience is particularly valuable because the pharmaceutical industry is one of the primary employers of pharmacology graduates, and spending a year working within it before your final year gives you both professional skills and a clear sense of the career you are working toward. Reading has a strong pharmacology department with active research connections to the pharmaceutical industry, which shapes the professional orientation of the programme.

The academic curriculum covers the principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, drug receptors and signalling, the pharmacology of major drug classes, neuropharmacology, cardiovascular pharmacology, and the drug discovery and development process. Laboratory work develops your practical and experimental skills alongside the theoretical content.

Graduates work in pharmaceutical research and development, clinical trials, regulatory affairs, medical communications, science writing, and academic research. Many go on to postgraduate study, including PhD research in pharmacology or related biomedical sciences.
