Pharmacology with a Modern Language

Pharmacology is the science of how drugs interact with living systems: how they reach their target, how they produce their effects, how the body processes and eliminates them, and what determines whether a drug is safe and effective. It is a discipline that sits between chemistry and biology, with immediate relevance to medicine, the pharmaceutical industry and the growing field of personalised healthcare. This four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year and a sandwich placement year with a work placement, meaning it is both an accessible and practically grounded degree. The foundation year provides the scientific preparation you need before progressing into the main programme, where you will study the mechanisms of drug action, pharmacokinetics, neuropharmacology, cardiovascular pharmacology, toxicology, drug discovery and development and the clinical and regulatory context of medicines. Alongside this you will develop your chosen modern language to a professional level, studying its grammar, culture and professional applications.

The sandwich placement places you in a pharmaceutical or related organisation for an extended period, developing your professional skills and industry knowledge.

Graduates move into careers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, clinical research, regulatory affairs, medical communications and health policy. The addition of language skills is particularly valuable in international pharmaceutical companies, where the ability to work across borders is a genuine differentiator.
