About this course

Pharmaceutical chemistry brings together the core disciplines of chemistry with a specialism in the science of medicines. Organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, and pharmacology each contribute essential tools: organic chemistry for the synthesis and characterisation of drug molecules, analytical chemistry for quality control and identification, biochemistry for understanding how drugs interact with biological systems, and pharmacology for the study of how they exert their effects. Together, they prepare you for the drug development process and for careers across the pharmaceutical and chemical industries.

At Huddersfield this three-year full-time degree includes a foundation year providing an additional entry route for students who need further preparation before advancing to the main degree, alongside a sandwich year that gives you substantial professional experience in a pharmaceutical or chemistry organisation. Work placement opportunities are also available throughout the programme, connecting your academic study to industrial and research practice. You will build your knowledge and develop the industry skills that are sought after in pharmaceutical development, manufacturing, and analysis, using well-equipped laboratories and working with staff who bring research and professional experience to their teaching.
