Paramedic Science

Paramedic science is the academic and clinical discipline underpinning the profession of paramedicine, which provides pre-hospital emergency care and urgent clinical assessment to patients in a wide range of settings. Paramedics are health professionals who respond to medical emergencies, administer treatments, make clinical decisions in dynamic and often unpredictable environments, and transport patients to appropriate care. The profession has evolved significantly in recent decades, moving from a primarily transport-focused role to a highly skilled clinical discipline with its own body of knowledge, evidence base, and scope of practice.

At the University of the West of Scotland, this three-year, full-time BSc Paramedic Science provides the academic foundation and clinical training required to work as a registered paramedic. You will study anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, pathophysiology, clinical assessment, and the legal and ethical frameworks that govern pre-hospital care, alongside the practical skills needed to manage patients across a range of emergency and urgent care scenarios. Clinical placements are central to the training, giving you direct experience in real pre-hospital settings under the supervision of experienced clinicians.

The programme leads to eligibility to register with the Health and Care Professions Council as a paramedic upon successful completion. The typical entry tariff of 184 points reflects the competitive and clinically demanding nature of the programme.

Paramedic science graduates work for NHS ambulance services, air ambulance charities, event medical services, and independent ambulance and urgent care providers. Many also work in primary care, emergency departments, and community urgent care settings as the scope of paramedicine continues to expand. Career progression within the ambulance service can lead to specialist practitioner, consultant paramedic, and managerial roles.

Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in advanced clinical practice, critical care, or related health sciences.
