Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a healthcare profession that uses a system of manual treatment, focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions and the ways in which the structure and function of the body interact to affect health and wellbeing. Osteopaths use their hands to identify and treat restrictions in movement, muscle tension, and other structural problems, and they also use exercise, rehabilitation, and lifestyle advice. The profession works with a wide range of patients, from people with back pain and sports injuries to those with headaches, postural problems, and conditions affecting movement and function in older age.

At Swansea University, this four-year full-time programme gives you the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to become a registered osteopath, qualified to diagnose and treat a wide range of health issues through manual therapy, tailored exercises, rehabilitation, and advice. You will study anatomy, physiology, pathology, and clinical reasoning alongside the practical osteopathic techniques that are central to the profession. Clinical training is integral to the programme, and you will develop your skills through supervised patient contact in real clinical environments.

The programme leads to eligibility for registration with the General Osteopathic Council, which is required for lawful practice in the UK.

Graduates from osteopathy programmes work in private practice, multi-disciplinary healthcare settings, sports medicine, and NHS-related roles. Many establish their own independent practices. Further study at postgraduate level is available for those who wish to develop specialist expertise in areas such as paediatric osteopathy, sports osteopathy, or osteopathic research.
