Optometry

Optometry is the health profession concerned with the examination, diagnosis, and management of disorders of vision and the eye. Optometrists are the primary eye care providers for most people, conducting sight tests, detecting refractive errors, prescribing spectacles and contact lenses, and identifying signs of eye disease and systemic conditions that manifest in the eye. The role is both a clinical and a scientific one: optometrists must understand the optics of vision, the anatomy and physiology of the visual system, and the pathology of conditions that affect it.

At Huddersfield this programme includes a foundation year before the main four-year optometry degree, making the total pathway five years. The foundation year is designed to ensure that all students have the scientific grounding in biology, chemistry, and physics that optometry study requires, which can broaden access to the profession. The main degree leads to a Master of Optometry, as optometry is regulated at postgraduate level in the UK, and graduates must complete a pre-registration year before gaining full registration with the General Optical Council.

Throughout the programme you will develop skills in refraction, contact lens fitting, binocular vision assessment, and the clinical examination of the eye, alongside a scientific understanding of visual optics, ocular disease, and the pharmacology relevant to eye care.

Qualifying as an optometrist opens a career in community optometry, hospital eye clinics, specialist contact lens practice, or low vision rehabilitation. The profession offers clinical independence, regular patient contact, and strong employment prospects, with optometrists working in both the NHS and the private sector. Research in visual science, academic optometry, and roles in the optical industry are further possibilities.
