About this course

Ocean and geophysics brings together two closely connected branches of earth science. Oceanography is the study of the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the world's oceans, examining how ocean currents circulate heat around the planet, how marine chemistry sustains life, and how the oceans interact with the atmosphere and climate system. Geophysics applies the methods of physics to the solid Earth and its interior, using seismic waves, gravity measurements, and magnetic and electromagnetic techniques to understand the structure and dynamics of the planet.

Together, these disciplines are central to our understanding of how the Earth works as a system.

At Bangor University, this three-year full-time programme includes an integrated foundation year, giving students a solid grounding in physical science and mathematics before advancing to specialist ocean and geophysics study. The programme combines lecture and laboratory work with field and sea-going experience, developing the practical and quantitative skills that both disciplines demand. A sandwich year with a year abroad and work placement gives you direct professional experience in oceanographic, geophysical, or environmental research contexts and international scientific exposure.

Graduates work in oceanographic research institutes, meteorological agencies, oil and gas exploration, environmental monitoring and consultancy, climate science, hydrographic survey, and government agencies with responsibilities for the marine environment. The quantitative and data analysis skills the degree develops are also valued in finance, data science, and technology sectors. Many graduates continue to postgraduate research in oceanography, geophysics, or related earth and environmental sciences.
