Nutrition and Dietetics

Nutrition and dietetics is the science of food and its relationship to health, and the professional practice of applying that science to help individuals and communities eat in ways that support their wellbeing and manage or prevent disease. Dietitians are the only healthcare professionals regulated by law to assess, diagnose, and treat dietary and nutritional problems, working across a wide range of clinical and community settings. The degree is a direct route to professional registration and a career in one of the most important and in-demand areas of the health professions.

At Wrexham University this three-year programme develops your grounding in the science of food and nutrition, anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry alongside the clinical and communication skills needed to practise as a dietitian. From the first year, you will build the ability to assess patients across the core areas in which dietitians work, developing the professional knowledge and practical competence that clinical placements require. You will engage with the full range of dietetic practice, from acute clinical settings where nutrition support is critical to recovery, to community and public health contexts where dietary advice can prevent chronic disease.

The professional skills component develops the communication and interpersonal abilities that a patient-facing clinical role demands.

Graduates qualifying as dietitians register with the Health and Care Professions Council and work in NHS hospitals and community services, public health, care homes, schools, food industry, sports nutrition, and private practice. Dietitians are employed across all the major clinical specialisms, including oncology, renal care, gastroenterology, diabetes, and paediatrics, as well as in eating disorder services and mental health settings. The profession offers clear career progression into specialist, advanced, and consultant practitioner roles.

Further study at postgraduate level in nutrition science, public health nutrition, or a clinical specialism is an option for those wishing to develop advanced expertise.
