Nursing

Nursing is a profession at the heart of healthcare, combining clinical knowledge and technical skill with the compassion, communication ability and professional judgement needed to care for people at their most vulnerable. Nurses assess patients, plan and deliver care, administer medicines, monitor recovery, educate patients and families and advocate for those in their care across a remarkable range of settings and circumstances. It is a demanding and deeply meaningful profession that requires commitment, resilience and the capacity to develop continuously as a practitioner.

At the University of the Highlands and Islands this full-time programme prepares you for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, combining classroom learning, digital and remote learning elements and substantial practice-based experience in clinical settings. The Highlands and Islands context is significant: the region includes remote and rural communities, islands and dispersed populations that present particular challenges and opportunities for healthcare delivery, and nurses trained in this environment develop an especially broad and adaptive set of clinical skills. You will attend classes in person at your local campus or learning centre, access course materials digitally, and complete work-based placements to gain direct clinical experience across a range of healthcare settings.

Graduates register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and pursue careers in NHS Highland and other health boards across Scotland, with particular relevance to rural, remote and island healthcare. The generalist and adaptive skills developed in the Highlands context are valued in any nursing setting. With experience, nurses progress into specialist, advanced practice, education and management roles.
