Nursing Studies
Children and young people's nursing is a specialism of the nursing profession dedicated to the care of infants, children and adolescents across the full range of health conditions and settings, from community and primary care through to acute paediatric wards, specialist children's hospitals and critical care units. It is a discipline that combines the clinical knowledge and skills of nursing with a deep understanding of child development, family-centred care, safeguarding and the particular communication skills needed to work effectively with children of different ages and their families. Nurses who specialise in children and young people's care occupy a crucial and rewarding role in the health system.
At the University of Surrey this three-year, full-time programme leads to registration as a Children's Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, the qualification required to practise as a registered nurse specialising in children and young people's care. You will study the biological and clinical sciences underpinning paediatric nursing, including anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and pathophysiology, alongside the social and psychological dimensions of child health, family-centred care, safeguarding, child development and the therapeutic relationship. Placements are a central and substantial part of the programme, giving you direct clinical experience across a range of settings and patient groups throughout your studies.
Surrey's strong connections with NHS trusts in the region mean you will work with experienced clinical mentors throughout your training.
Graduates register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and pursue careers in paediatric nursing across the NHS and independent sector, working in community children's nursing, acute paediatric wards, specialist units including neonatal intensive care, oncology, cardiology and neurology, school nursing and health visiting. Senior nursing, specialist practitioner and advanced clinical practice roles follow with experience and additional qualifications. Some graduates also move into nursing education, research or management.
