Nursing Studies (Registered Mental Health Nursing) with Foundation Year
Mental health nursing is one of the most demanding and rewarding branches of the nursing profession, focused on supporting people experiencing conditions such as depression, anxiety, psychosis, eating disorders, addiction, and personality disorders across a wide range of settings. It requires clinical knowledge alongside exceptional interpersonal skills, the ability to build therapeutic relationships with people in acute distress, and a commitment to recovery-focused, person-centred care. Mental health nurses work in hospitals, community teams, crisis services, forensic settings, and increasingly in schools and primary care.
At the University of Surrey this four-year programme combines a foundation year with the full pre-registration nursing degree, giving you the academic preparation you need before moving into the clinical training that leads to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The foundation year ensures that all students, whatever their prior educational background, are equipped with the scientific, analytical and academic skills that undergraduate nursing study requires. Across the programme as a whole you will study the theoretical and practical dimensions of mental health care, developing your understanding of psychiatric conditions, therapeutic interventions, pharmacology, and the legal and ethical frameworks that govern mental health practice.
Clinical placements form an essential part of your training throughout the programme, giving you supervised practice experience in real-world settings.
Registered mental health nurses are in sustained demand across the NHS and independent sector. Career paths include roles in acute inpatient wards, community mental health teams, crisis and home treatment teams, liaison psychiatry, child and adolescent mental health services, and forensic mental health. Many nurses specialise over time, taking on advanced practitioner roles or moving into nurse management, education, or research.
Surrey's integration of digital skills and contemporary clinical training prepares you well for a rapidly evolving profession.
