Mental health nursing is one of the most human-facing professions in healthcare, requiring practitioners who can combine clinical knowledge with exceptional interpersonal skill, emotional intelligence and a genuine commitment to the people they support. Mental health nurses work with individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, psychosis, eating disorders, addiction, trauma and a wide range of other conditions, offering not just care and compassion but the professional skills to assess needs, plan interventions and support recovery. At Glasgow Caledonian University this four-year programme prepares you to practise as a registered nurse in mental health settings across Scotland and beyond.
You will study the biological, psychological and social dimensions of mental health and illness, developing a nuanced understanding of how conditions develop, how they are experienced by individuals and families and how evidence-based interventions can support recovery. The programme builds your clinical assessment and communication skills, and you will develop the ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams. An emphasis throughout the course is placed on promoting individual strengths, wellbeing and independence, reflecting a recovery-oriented approach to mental health care rather than one focused solely on symptom management.
You will spend significant time in clinical placements, gaining practical experience in real mental health settings under supervision, and the programme is designed to meet the registration requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
Graduates register as mental health nurses and work across a wide range of settings including NHS inpatient wards, community mental health teams, crisis services, forensic units, substance misuse services and the voluntary sector. With experience, mental health nurses develop into specialist, advanced and consultant practitioner roles, and many move into management, education or research. Postgraduate study in areas such as cognitive-behavioural therapy, family therapy, leadership or public health is also a common progression route.
