Nursing Associates are a registered healthcare profession that bridges the gap between healthcare support workers and registered nurses, working as part of the nursing team to deliver hands-on, person-centred care across a range of health and care settings. The role was developed to expand the nursing workforce and to create a progression route for those working in healthcare who wish to develop their skills and formal qualifications. Nursing Associates work under the direction of registered nurses, contributing to care delivery and taking responsibility for tasks appropriate to their level of training and registration.

At the University of Salford, this two-year full-time programme prepares you for practice as a Nursing Associate with a specialism in the care of children and young people. You will study the knowledge, skills, and professional values that underpin effective nursing associate practice, including anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, communication, safeguarding, and the legal and ethical frameworks that govern healthcare. The children and young people pathway focuses your clinical learning on the specific needs, developmental stages, and care contexts relevant to this age group.

Significant time on practice placement is embedded throughout the programme, giving you direct experience of working with children, young people, and their families in NHS and community settings.

Graduates are eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as Nursing Associates, which is required for practice in the UK. Employment opportunities exist across NHS trusts, community health services, schools, and the independent and voluntary care sectors. Many Nursing Associates go on to use their qualification as a stepping stone to full registered nurse training, accessing a degree-level nursing programme through a top-up route.
