Nursing Mental Health

Mental health nursing addresses some of the most challenging and consequential work in the healthcare system. Mental health nurses support people experiencing psychosis, severe depression, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, eating disorders, addiction, and many other conditions that affect the way people think, feel, and relate to the world. This work demands clinical competence, strong relational skills, an understanding of trauma and its effects, and the ability to maintain professional boundaries while engaging with genuine compassion.

At the University of Southampton, this three-year full-time programme develops you to deliver care that is psychologically aware, relational, and built around safety, trust, and empowerment. Trauma-informed principles underpin everything from clinical skills to communication styles, reflecting current evidence about what effective mental health care looks like. You will develop an understanding of the biological, psychological, and social dimensions of mental health, alongside the clinical skills needed to assess, plan, and implement care in collaboration with the people you support and their families.

Communication and therapeutic relationship-building are treated as core professional skills throughout the programme, not optional extras.

The typical entry tariff is 136 UCAS points, and the degree leads to eligibility to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a Registered Nurse (Mental Health). Clinical placements are an essential part of the programme, giving you experience across a range of settings.

Graduates of mental health nursing programmes work in inpatient settings, community mental health teams, crisis services, early intervention services, forensic mental health, older adult services, and child and adolescent mental health services. Further study options include postgraduate programmes in advanced mental health practice, cognitive behavioural therapy, and mental health nursing leadership.
