Mental health nursing is a profession that sits at one of the most important frontiers of modern healthcare. Understanding and responding to the full range of mental health conditions, from anxiety and depression to psychosis, personality disorders, and eating disorders, requires a combination of clinical knowledge, therapeutic skill, and genuine human sensitivity. Mental health nurses are often the most consistent professional relationship in a service user's life, providing support, developing care plans, and advocating for the needs of individuals who may face significant stigma and disadvantage.
At Keele University this three-year full-time degree equips you with the knowledge, skills, and empathy to become a competent mental health nurse. You will study essential nursing theory covering mental health conditions, pharmacology, psychological therapies, and the legal and ethical frameworks that govern mental health care in the UK. Alongside academic study, you will gain practical experience through Keele's excellent clinical simulation facilities and through a series of placements in NHS and community settings, building your confidence and competence in working in partnership with service users, their families, and the wider multidisciplinary team.

Graduates register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as mental health nurses and go on to work across NHS inpatient units, community mental health teams, crisis services, forensic settings, and voluntary organisations. Many nurses develop specialisms, take on leadership and management roles, or pursue advanced clinical practice.
