Mental health nursing is a profession that sits at the intersection of clinical science, therapeutic relationship and social advocacy. Mental health nurses work with people experiencing a wide range of conditions, including depression, anxiety, psychosis, personality disorders, eating disorders and substance misuse, supporting them to manage their conditions, recover where possible and live with dignity and agency. The role demands clinical knowledge, strong interpersonal skills and the resilience to work with people in some of the most difficult periods of their lives, and it is among the most demanding and most rewarding in the health and social care sector.

At Aberystwyth University, this three-year full-time nursing degree is accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and prepares you for registration as a mental health nurse. You will develop the skills and experience needed to meet the evolving health needs of people with mental health conditions, with a curriculum that combines theoretical understanding of mental health, psychological therapies and clinical practice with substantial practical experience in a range of placements. The programme is designed to produce graduates who can contribute to improving access to healthcare, wellbeing, social inclusion and quality of life for the people they work with.

Registered mental health nurses work in NHS inpatient wards, community mental health teams, crisis services, forensic units, schools, prisons, and with charities and private providers across a wide range of settings. The demand for mental health nurses in the UK is significant and growing, reflecting increasing recognition of the scale and importance of mental health need. Many nurses go on to develop specialist expertise, moving into roles in psychological therapies, leadership, practice education or advanced clinical practice.

Postgraduate study leading to advanced nursing practice, prescribing qualifications or academic roles in nursing education is also a well-established route.
