About this course

Mental health nursing is a profession that asks a great deal of its practitioners. It demands clinical knowledge, the capacity for empathetic and therapeutic engagement, professional judgement in complex and sometimes distressing situations, and a commitment to the dignity and autonomy of people experiencing some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Mental health nurses support people across the full range of psychiatric conditions, from anxiety and depression to psychosis and personality disorders, in settings that span acute inpatient wards, community teams, crisis services, and primary care.

At Edge Hill University you will study across three years on a full-time programme. The degree develops your understanding of mental health nursing theory and practice alongside the scientific foundations the profession requires, including psychology, neuroscience, pharmacology, and the legal and ethical frameworks that govern mental health care. Clinical placements are central to the degree: you will spend substantial time working in real mental health services under the supervision of registered nurses, building the skills, professional identity, and practical confidence that can only come from genuine clinical experience.

You will learn to support people who are being assessed or diagnosed with a mental illness, to promote wellbeing and recovery, and to work effectively within the multidisciplinary teams that characterise modern mental health services.

Successful completion of this degree makes you eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a qualified mental health nurse, enabling you to practise. There is significant and sustained demand for mental health nurses across the NHS and independent sectors, and newly registered nurses can work in a wide variety of specialisms and settings. Career development pathways include community mental health nursing, advanced clinical practice, mental health consultancy, nursing management, and education.

Postgraduate study in mental health, clinical psychology, therapeutic approaches, or leadership is available for those who wish to develop further expertise or move into specialist or senior roles.
