Learning disability nursing is one of the four fields of nursing practice in the UK, and it addresses a set of needs that are distinctive and profound. People with learning disabilities may have difficulties with communication, understanding, and everyday living, and they are statistically more likely to experience complex health conditions, mental health difficulties, and social disadvantage. Nurses in this field work to bridge those gaps, advocating for individuals, coordinating care across services, and helping people with learning disabilities to live as independently and healthily as possible.

At Nottingham Trent University, this three-year, full-time degree prepares you for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a learning disability nurse. Your studies will cover human anatomy and physiology, the legal and ethical frameworks governing care and capacity, communication strategies for working with people who have varied and complex needs, and the assessment and management of both physical and mental health conditions. You will also study the social model of disability and the history of care provision in the UK, developing a critical perspective on how services have evolved and the values that should guide contemporary practice.

Theory is integrated with substantial clinical placement experience throughout the programme, so that academic learning and hands-on practice develop together.

Graduates are qualified to register and work immediately as learning disability nurses across the NHS, independent sector, and voluntary organisations. Employment settings include community learning disability teams, specialist inpatient units, day services, residential care, and supported living. The role is collaborative by nature, and you will work alongside social workers, occupational therapists, psychiatrists, speech and language therapists, and families.

Many nurses go on to specialise further in areas such as positive behaviour support, forensic learning disability services, or autism, and postgraduate study is available for those interested in advanced practice, education, or research.
