Nursing (Children's) Direct Entry
Children's nursing is a demanding and deeply rewarding specialism that requires practitioners to combine clinical expertise with sensitivity to the particular emotional and developmental needs of young patients and their families. Unlike adult nursing, children's nursing demands an understanding of how illness and treatment are experienced differently across the full span of childhood, from newborns to adolescents, and how effective care always involves parents and carers as essential partners. This two-year Direct Entry programme at the University of Derby is designed for applicants who already hold a Foundation Degree and are registered as Nursing Associates, offering an accelerated route to qualification as a Registered Nurse (Child).
The programme is a holistic learning experience that develops both clinical competence and emotional resilience. You will build on the knowledge and skills you have already acquired through your earlier qualification, deepening your understanding of paediatric conditions, pharmacology, child development, and family-centred care. The course equips you to meet the unique challenges of child nursing, which include communicating with patients who cannot always articulate their symptoms, managing the anxiety of frightened parents, and navigating the ethical complexities that arise when clinical decisions involve children who have limited capacity to consent.
You will develop the ability to remain composed and effective in high-pressure environments while sustaining the warmth and attentiveness that children and families depend upon. The programme also includes a foundation element and a year abroad component, enriching your learning through exposure to different healthcare systems and nursing traditions. The typical entry tariff is 120 UCAS points, and the course is studied full time.
Graduates of this programme are eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and to practise as Registered Nurses in children's settings. Career options include hospital-based roles in paediatric wards, neonatal units, and emergency departments, as well as community children's nursing, school nursing, and specialist roles in oncology, mental health, and palliative care. Further study at postgraduate level enables specialisation or progression into advanced practice and nursing leadership.
