Nursing

Children's nursing is the field of nursing concerned with the healthcare of infants, children, and young people from birth to adulthood, including those with acute illnesses, long-term conditions, and complex healthcare needs. It is a profession that requires both clinical expertise and a particular kind of relational skill: the ability to communicate effectively with children at different developmental stages and to support families through some of the most stressful experiences they will face. Children's nurses work across a wide range of settings, from acute hospital wards and intensive care units to community teams, schools, and outpatient clinics.

At the University of Southampton, this three-year, full-time programme prepares you for registration as a children's nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Clinical placements are central to the training, giving you hands-on experience across a range of children's nursing settings under the supervision of registered nurses and the guidance of university staff. Through the academic components, you will study anatomy and physiology, child development, pharmacology, safeguarding, family-centred care, and the evidence base that underpins nursing practice.

Children's nursing graduates are in consistent demand across the NHS and the independent and voluntary healthcare sectors.
