Nursing (Adult) with Foundation Year
Adult nursing is one of the most important and demanding professions in the UK healthcare system. Nurses provide hands-on clinical care across a vast range of settings, from acute hospital wards and emergency departments to community clinics, care homes, and patients' own homes. The profession requires not only strong clinical knowledge but the emotional intelligence, communication skills, and professional resilience to support people through some of the most difficult experiences of their lives, often over extended periods and in conditions of considerable complexity.
At Keele this four-year full-time programme begins with a foundation year that provides additional preparation and support for students who need it before progressing to the nursing degree itself. You will gain essential nursing knowledge and authentic clinical practice experience in Keele's excellent simulation facilities and in a range of placement settings, developing the competence and confidence to qualify as an adult nurse. The curriculum covers anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, nursing assessment, therapeutic skills, professional values, and the legal and ethical frameworks that govern nursing practice.

Graduates register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as adult nurses and go on to work across NHS trusts, community health services, independent healthcare providers, and international settings. Adult nursing offers significant variety, with scope to develop clinical specialisms in areas such as oncology, cardiology, intensive care, or mental health. Many nurses progress into advanced practice, leadership, or management roles over the course of their careers, and postgraduate study in specialist clinical practice or nursing education is available for those wishing to develop further.
