About this course

Adult nursing is the largest branch of the nursing profession in the UK, concerned with the care of patients from young adulthood through old age across the full spectrum of health conditions and care settings. Adult nurses work in hospitals, in primary and community care, in care homes, and in patients' own homes, supporting people through acute illness, chronic conditions, surgical recovery, end-of-life care, and everything in between. It is a profession that demands clinical competence, compassionate communication, clinical judgement, and the ability to work under pressure as part of a multidisciplinary team.

At the University of York this three-year programme is delivered through a curriculum that is scientific and research-informed, preparing you to practise nursing that is grounded in evidence rather than custom alone. The course includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement experience, integrating clinical practice and professional development throughout your studies. You will develop the knowledge and skills required for registered nurse status, covering anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, clinical assessment, and the management of common and complex health conditions, while also building the confidence and professional identity that nursing demands.

The placement experience is central to the course, connecting academic learning to real clinical environments from early in the programme.

Qualifying as a registered adult nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council opens careers across hospital, community, and specialist nursing practice in the NHS and the independent sector. Nurses with a degree from a research-led university like York are well placed for clinical specialist roles, leadership positions, and progression into advanced clinical practice. Further study at postgraduate level in clinical specialisms, nursing education, or healthcare leadership is available for those seeking to develop their expertise.

The year abroad element offers a distinctive international dimension to a nursing education, giving graduates additional breadth of professional experience.

The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: early clinical exposure gave me the confidence to approach patients. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” local cost of living is…

I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: anatomy teaching here is particularly strong β€” full dissection experience. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” local cost of li…
