About this course

Adult nursing is one of the most significant and rewarding healthcare professions, concerned with the care of people across the adult lifespan in hospital wards, community settings, care homes and patients' own homes. Adult nurses assess patient needs, plan and deliver clinical care, administer medications, support recovery and provide the human connection that is as important to health and wellbeing as technical treatment. The role demands clinical knowledge, practical skill, emotional resilience and the ability to communicate with patients, families and colleagues across highly varied and sometimes pressured situations.

At the University of Bradford, this three-year qualifying programme, which includes a foundation year for those who need additional academic preparation, is built around the understanding that nursing is confirmed through experience as much as academic study, as one student quoted by the university describes: placement experience confirms and deepens the commitment to the profession. You will study anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, nursing theory, evidence-based practice, leadership, safeguarding and the ethical and legal frameworks that govern nursing. Supervised clinical placements in NHS and community settings are an essential and substantial part of the programme, providing the hands-on experience and professional formation that registration requires.

Bradford's nursing programme is designed to meet the NMC's standards for nurse education, and graduates who successfully complete the programme can apply to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as adult nurses.

Graduates enter practice in NHS hospitals, community healthcare, mental health services, care homes and private healthcare. Career progression leads from newly qualified nurse through specialist practitioner, advanced nurse practitioner and nurse consultant roles, as well as into management, education and research. Further postgraduate study is an option for those interested in specialist clinical, research or leadership roles.
