About this course

Adult nursing is one of the most directly meaningful careers available to a university graduate. Nurses are the largest professional group in the NHS, and they work at the point where scientific knowledge, clinical skill, human compassion and practical judgement meet every day. Adult nursing covers the care of people from the age of eighteen onwards across the full range of acute, community and specialist settings, from surgical wards and intensive care to district nursing, rehabilitation and palliative care.

The demands are real, but so is the reward of making a genuine difference to people at their most vulnerable.

At Swansea University, the Adult Nursing degree at the Carmarthen Campus will give you the skills and experience to enter this diverse and essential profession. The programme runs for three years full time, and it combines academic study of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathophysiology and nursing theory with substantial clinical placements that take you into real healthcare settings from early in the programme. Practice learning is integral to nursing education: you cannot become a competent nurse without spending significant time caring for patients under supervision, and the placement structure ensures you build experience progressively across a range of settings and patient groups.

The typical entry tariff is 136 points.

You will develop clinical assessment skills, an understanding of medicines management, the ability to plan and evaluate care, and the communication skills that working with patients, families and multidisciplinary teams demands. The ethical and professional dimensions of nursing, including safeguarding, consent, dignity and record-keeping, are woven through the programme.

On successful completion you will be eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a registered nurse, which is the gateway to professional practice. Career progression can lead to specialist nursing roles, advanced clinical practice, nursing leadership and management, education, research and nurse consultancy. The NHS and independent healthcare sector both offer extensive opportunities for career development.

A great decision
This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: the integration between pre-clinical teaching and placements is well designed. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” the cit…

Highly recommend
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: OSCEs are tough but you leave competent. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” good transport links make it…
