Nursing (Adult) and Leadership

Nursing is one of the most demanding and rewarding professions in public life, requiring both deep clinical knowledge and the emotional intelligence, resilience, and interpersonal skill to provide compassionate care to people who are often at their most vulnerable. Adult nursing is concerned with the health of people from late adolescence through old age, covering the full range of acute and long-term conditions, from surgical recovery and critical illness to chronic disease management and end-of-life care. Nurses are the largest professional group in the NHS and are central to the quality of patient experience and health outcomes.

At the University of Derby, this programme is a four-year full-time degree designed as a holistic learning experience that aims to develop emotionally resilient and transformational nurses capable of leading as well as delivering care. The inclusion of a leadership focus reflects the NHS's recognition that nurses need not only clinical competence but also the ability to advocate for patients, lead teams, and drive improvement in care systems. The programme leads to both NMC registration as a qualified adult nurse and a Masters level award, making it a particularly ambitious and comprehensive qualification for those who do not already hold a degree.

Clinical placements are integral to the programme, taking you into hospital wards, community settings, and specialist care environments where you develop your skills under registered nurse supervision. Throughout, the programme develops your theoretical understanding of health, illness, and healthcare systems alongside the practical competencies that professional registration requires.

Graduates register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and pursue careers across the NHS, independent healthcare providers, and the voluntary sector. Many go on to specialist practice development and some pursue further postgraduate qualifications in clinical leadership or advanced practice.
