Nursing - Dual Registration in Adult and Children and Young People

Nursing across multiple fields of practice is designed to produce nurses with a breadth of clinical competence that single-field training cannot provide. A programme combining adult and children and young people nursing develops nurses who can provide person-centred, high-quality care across two of the NHS's largest patient groups, and who can move between these settings with the confidence and skill that both demand. As NHS workforce planning increasingly values flexible practitioners who can work across boundaries, dual-registration nurses are in strong and growing demand.

At Robert Gordon University this four-year full-time programme has been developed in response to local workforce need, recognising that the ability to practise in both adult and children and young people's nursing is a distinctive and valuable qualification. You will develop a broad clinical skillset through a curriculum that covers the theory and practice of nursing in both fields, supported by extensive placement experience across a range of care settings. You will learn to deliver safe, evidence-based, compassionate care to adults and to children and young people, developing the professional values, clinical skills, and communication competence that both fields of practice require.

Dual-registration graduates hold a unique position in the nursing workforce, eligible to work across adult and paediatric settings in hospitals, community services, schools, and specialist units. NHS Trusts in Scotland and throughout the UK are actively seeking nurses with this breadth of registration as a way of improving workforce flexibility and continuity of care. Many graduates go on to develop specialist expertise in areas such as paediatric intensive care, school nursing, adult community nursing, or family-centred care.

Postgraduate study in nursing, child health, or advanced clinical practice is a natural progression for those seeking to move into specialist or leadership roles.
