Adult nursing is the profession concerned with providing care, treatment, and support to adults across the full range of health conditions and life circumstances, from acute illness and surgical recovery to chronic disease management and end-of-life care. Registered nurses work in hospitals, community settings, care homes, GP practices, mental health services, and many other environments, and the profession demands a particular combination of clinical knowledge, practical skill, emotional intelligence, and the ability to make sound decisions under pressure. It is one of the largest and most important healthcare professions, and the need for well-trained nurses remains consistently significant across the NHS and the independent health and care sector.
At Birmingham City University, the BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing degree is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), which is the professional regulator for nursing and midwifery in the UK. This approval means the programme meets the professional standards required for registration as a qualified nurse, and that successful graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the NMC. The three-year full-time programme delivers the clinical skills, evidence-based knowledge, and professional values that are central to contemporary nursing practice.
You will study anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, pathophysiology of common conditions, and the principles of nursing assessment, care planning, and intervention, alongside the ethical, legal, and policy frameworks that govern practice.
A substantial proportion of the programme is spent in clinical placements, where you will work in a range of settings under the supervision of qualified practitioners. This placement experience is not optional context but a core part of your education, progressively developing your clinical skills and professional confidence.
Upon graduation and NMC registration, adult nurses work across hospital wards, intensive care, operating theatres, outpatient and community services, and many specialist clinical settings. Career progression includes senior clinical nursing roles, nurse specialist and advanced practice roles, management, education, and research. Postgraduate study supports those moving into advanced nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, or leadership roles.
