Nursing - Adult
Adult nursing is the field of professional nursing concerned with the care and treatment of adults across all settings, from acute hospital wards and emergency departments to community clinics, care homes, and people's own homes. Adult nurses support people through illness, surgical recovery, long-term conditions, and the health challenges of ageing, working as part of multidisciplinary teams to assess needs, plan and deliver care, monitor outcomes, and communicate with patients and families. The profession requires a combination of clinical knowledge, technical skill, empathetic communication, and the professional judgement that comes from rigorous training and reflective practice.
At Robert Gordon University this three-year full-time programme develops your capabilities to support the health and wellbeing of adults across a variety of contexts, including both hospital and community settings. You will develop the clinical and professional skills needed to deliver compassionate, evidence-based care to adults experiencing acute and long-term illnesses and injuries. The programme combines academic study with substantial clinical practice, preparing you for the realities of nursing work with direct patient contact in a range of settings.

Qualifying as an adult nurse from RGU makes you eligible for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, which is required for independent professional practice. Graduates work across NHS settings in Scotland and beyond, as well as in private healthcare, care homes, and community organisations. Many nurses go on to specialise in particular clinical areas such as emergency medicine, oncology, or community nursing, or progress into leadership, management, advanced practice, research, and education roles.
Some pursue postgraduate study to develop specialist clinical or academic expertise.
