Nursing - Adult

Adult nursing is the largest branch of the nursing profession, concerned with the care and treatment of adults across the full range of health conditions, from acute illness and trauma to long-term conditions and palliative care. Nurses are at the front line of healthcare delivery, providing direct patient care, coordinating treatment plans, educating patients and families, advocating for patient needs and contributing to the evidence-based development of nursing practice. The role demands clinical competence, empathy, ethical judgement and the ability to work under pressure in complex, multidisciplinary environments.

At Birmingham City University, this three-year full-time programme is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and prepares you for registration as an adult nurse. This January intake route gives you an alternative entry point to the programme while following the same NMC-approved curriculum. You will develop the clinical skills and extensive practice experience needed to work safely and effectively as a professional nurse, studying both the scientific foundations of nursing and the communication, leadership and ethical dimensions of professional practice.

The programme is delivered across a blend of university-based study and clinical placements in the West Midlands, giving you experience of nursing in a range of real healthcare settings.

Graduates who qualify as adult nurses are eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and can work across NHS hospitals, community health services, independent sector providers, care homes and a wide range of specialist settings. Career development can lead to specialist nursing roles in areas including critical care, oncology, theatres, diabetes, infection prevention or district nursing, or into nursing management, advanced clinical practice or nurse education. Postgraduate study is well supported for those who want to develop specialist expertise or move into leadership or academic roles.
