About this course

Neuroscience is the scientific study of the nervous system, and at the University of Warwick, this four-year full-time programme with industrial placement is one of the most specialised and demanding life sciences degrees available. It focuses specifically on how the brain and central nervous system work, how they develop, how they give rise to behaviour and cognition, and how they fail in neurological and psychiatric disease. Warwick's School of Life Sciences brings together expertise in molecular and cellular neuroscience, systems neuroscience, and the neuroscience of disease, providing a research environment that informs and enriches the degree programme.

You will study the core biological foundations of neuroscience, including cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, and physiology, before moving into increasingly specialised neuroscience topics: the mechanisms of synaptic transmission, the organisation of sensory and motor systems, neural development, neurogenomics, and the neuroscientific basis of conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, and depression. The programme includes an industrial placement, giving you a substantial period of professional experience in a pharmaceutical company, biomedical research institution, or other relevant organisation before you graduate. This placement is embedded in the four-year structure and provides direct exposure to the kind of neuroscience research or applied work that your studies are preparing you for, as well as the professional skills that are hard to develop in a purely academic environment.

You will develop rigorous laboratory skills, strong scientific literacy, and the ability to engage with the primary research literature in a rapidly advancing field.

Graduates go on to careers in pharmaceutical and biomedical research, clinical science, science communication, healthcare, and data science. Many pursue postgraduate study including PhD programmes in neuroscience, graduate-entry medicine, and research roles in academic or commercial settings.
