Neuroscience

Neuroscience is the scientific study of the brain and nervous system, and it sits at one of the most exciting frontiers in modern science. Questions about how neural activity gives rise to perception, memory, emotion, language, and consciousness are among the deepest that science attempts to answer, and the discipline draws on biology, psychology, chemistry, and increasingly computational methods to approach them. Understanding the brain is also central to understanding and treating neurological and psychiatric conditions, from depression and anxiety to Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's, and the aftermath of stroke.

At Roehampton University, this three-year full-time degree takes an interdisciplinary approach, combining biology and psychology to explore the brain and nervous system with a particular focus on cognitive neuroscience and the neuroscience of health and wellbeing. You will study the structure and function of the nervous system at molecular, cellular, and systems levels alongside the psychological frameworks used to understand cognition, behaviour, and mental health. The programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you the opportunity to develop professional experience in a relevant research, clinical, or applied setting before you complete your degree.

Graduates in neuroscience go on to a wide range of careers in science, healthcare, and adjacent sectors. Many pursue postgraduate study in neuroscience, clinical psychology, medicine, or biomedical research. Others move into roles in pharmaceutical research and development, healthcare consultancy, science communication, education, or data science, where the analytical and quantitative skills developed in the degree are highly valued.
