About this course

Neuroscience and psychology is a degree that addresses one of the most profound and difficult questions in science: how the physical processes of the brain give rise to thought, feeling, perception, memory and behaviour. Neuroscience examines the nervous system at levels from molecular signalling and synaptic transmission through neural circuits and systems to the whole-brain organisation of cognition and consciousness. Psychology complements this with the study of mental processes and behaviour from cognitive, developmental, social and clinical perspectives.

Together they provide a comprehensive framework for understanding the mind.

At King's College London this programme is offered by the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, the premier centre for mental health and neuroscience research in Europe. The emphasis on research-led teaching means you benefit directly from world-leading expertise and state-of-the-art research facilities. The degree runs over four years full time and includes a professional placement year, giving you direct experience in a relevant research or clinical context that substantially strengthens your scientific development and professional profile.

Graduates are well placed for research careers in academic neuroscience, psychiatry, pharmacology and clinical psychology, and the placement year significantly strengthens applications for competitive postgraduate research programmes. Clinical routes into psychiatry, clinical neuropsychology, clinical psychology or neurology require further postgraduate training, and the depth of scientific training this degree provides is excellent preparation for it. Other graduates move into pharmaceutical and biotechnology research, science communication, healthcare management, policy and the growing field of brain health technology.
