Music Production

Music production is the art and craft of shaping sound into recorded music, involving the creative, technical, and business skills needed to take a piece of music from initial idea to final release. The producer's role sits at the intersection of musicianship, technology, and commercial awareness, encompassing arranging, recording, mixing, and mastering, as well as an understanding of the music industry and the audiences for which music is made. A degree in music production develops all of these dimensions, combining musical knowledge with technical fluency and industry understanding.

At Anglia Ruskin University, this three-year full-time programme is designed to take you beyond making music into mastering technology, understanding your audience, making connections, and gaining the skills that allow you to stand out in a crowded industry. You will develop your ability to use digital audio workstations, studio hardware, synthesis, sampling, and mixing and mastering tools at a professional level, and you will engage with the creative and business dimensions of producing music in contemporary contexts. The programme develops both your technical competence and your musical sensibility, encouraging you to think critically about sound, arrangement, and production aesthetic while also understanding the commercial and cultural environments in which music production operates.

Graduates go on to careers as music producers, recording engineers, sound designers, beatmakers, audio post-production specialists, and music technology educators. Many build freelance careers working with artists and labels, while others move into studio management, music technology product development, or the games and interactive audio sectors. Postgraduate study in music production, audio engineering, or music technology is an option for those who wish to develop specialist expertise, and some graduates go on to significant careers as independent producers or within the music industry more broadly.
