Moral and Philosophical Studies with Religious Education
Moral and philosophical studies with religious education brings together three interconnected areas of inquiry: the systematic study of ethics and moral reasoning, the philosophical investigation of fundamental questions about knowledge, existence and value, and the academic study of religion alongside preparation for teaching religious education. Together these disciplines cultivate precisely the kind of reflective, critical and open-minded thinking that education about values, beliefs and human experience demands.
This four-year degree at the University of the Highlands and Islands is delivered in a blended mode, combining in-person attendance at a local campus or learning centre with digital access to classes and materials, and a work-based activity component that develops practical industry experience. This flexible approach is particularly well suited to students who benefit from local access and the combination of face-to-face and online learning. You will engage with the history and practice of Western and non-Western philosophy, develop your understanding of ethical theory and its application to contemporary moral questions, and study the world's religious traditions in ways that respect both scholarly rigour and religious diversity.
The religious education strand prepares you to teach RE effectively, bringing knowledge, critical thinking and sensitivity to the classroom.
Graduates are well prepared for careers in teaching, particularly in schools that require religious education teachers with genuine philosophical depth. The critical thinking, ethical reasoning and research skills the programme develops are also applicable in a wide range of other roles, including chaplaincy, the voluntary sector, faith-based organisations, community development, social work and public service. Further professional training as a teacher and postgraduate study in philosophy, ethics or religious studies are routes available to graduates who wish to develop their practice or specialist knowledge.
