Modern Languages (Russian and Spanish) and English

Russian, Spanish, and English is a degree of exceptional linguistic range, bringing together three languages that together give you access to some of the world's most significant literary traditions and to more than a billion speakers across Europe, Latin America, North America, and Central Asia. Russian connects you to one of the great literary languages of the modern era, the language of Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov, and Akhmatova, as well as to a culture and political history of enormous global significance. Spanish gives you access to the diverse worlds of Spain and Latin America.

English, studied here as a literary discipline, brings the full depth of another major tradition.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time degree develops sound grammatical accuracy and a high level of oral aptitude in Russian, alongside deep cultural and literary understanding of Russian-speaking worlds, their histories, societies, and contemporary realities. The Spanish component develops genuine linguistic fluency and cultural understanding across the Hispanophone world. The English literary component adds a third disciplinary strand, connecting language study to critical reading and analysis of literary tradition.

A year abroad is integrated into the degree, providing the immersive experience that is essential for genuine language development. The typical entry tariff is 200 UCAS points.

Graduates of Russian, Spanish, and English degree programmes have an exceptionally distinctive profile. Careers in diplomacy, translation and interpreting, international journalism, academic research, international business, cultural organisations, and the civil service are all natural directions.
