About this course

German and Spanish together cover two of the most globally significant language families in the world. German is spoken by over 100 million people across central Europe and is the language of one of the world's largest economies, while Spanish is spoken by over 500 million people across Europe, Latin America and beyond, making it one of the most geographically and demographically extensive languages on earth. Studying both at degree level gives you access to two rich literary and cultural traditions and positions you to work in an exceptionally wide range of international contexts.

At Bath, which is known for its strong emphasis on professional preparation and international engagement, this four-year programme includes a sandwich year and work placement opportunities. You will develop both languages to an advanced level, studying the literatures, histories and cultures of the German-speaking and Spanish-speaking worlds alongside the linguistic skills of translation, oral communication and written analysis. The sandwich year gives you the opportunity to work in a professional environment in which one or both languages are used, whether in a business, educational, cultural or governmental setting, adding direct professional experience to your academic training.

The typical entry tariff is 152 UCAS points.

Graduates work in international business, diplomacy, translation and interpreting, teaching, journalism, publishing, cultural organisations, law, consultancy and European institutions. The combination of German and Spanish is particularly well regarded by employers with interests across both continental Europe and the Americas. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in modern languages, European business, translation, linguistics or area studies.

The sandwich year experience typically gives Bath language graduates a competitive advantage in graduate recruitment.

Genuinely worthwhile
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” the city i…

Exceeded expectations
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” local cost o…
